I have a list of rules that I hand to the recording artist the first time they come in, and expect them to obey by them, and understand them everytime they come in to record with us. 1. Prices are not negotiable. 2. All sessions are timed. 3. 50% of the payment is expected before hand, 50% after. You do not get your material without completely paying for it. (I have a wooden rack with a lock on it, that I stash the final copy in until Im payed.) 4. Smoking is not permitted. 5. Any improper use of equipment, or damage to equipment, and you are held financially responsible. 6. All decisions are made by the engineer and artist. 7. A limited business contract must be signed before the recording, and in it thus stipulates all costs, and that you agree to pay, or leave empty handed. Now for the most part, everyone has no problem with those rules. However, I've had some loud mouthed people come in from word of mouth, and ask to see the equipment before hand, and went so far as to tell me that EVERY studio carries at least 3 Neuman mics, AND they only use Avalon pre's. So I opened the door, and told them to get the fuck out of my face. I've even had some kids come in with half the payment, signed the agreement, and afterwards, wanted they're material, and "promised" to pay next week. So after explaining the rules, they got all pissy, and I broke the cd, tossed it in the can behind the couch, and started recording the next artist while they stood there looking like assholes. What are your rules?
