Number 1, Fuck all that bullshit that you guys do to the vocals lol. You really dont even need to compress shit cause it fucks up shit anyway. I say if you recording at home then dont use compression cause I see it to be more usefull in studios. To really have ya vocals nice n good is to just record ya verses, do some noise reduction by one of the process where you select the silence and save it, and add a lil EQ and thats it. none of all that extra bullshit

And now... an even better process.

    - Use a limiter at -2 threshold, fast attack, fast release, and at least 8:1 ratio while recording.
    - A high-pass filter between 40 and 120 hz... depending on your voice using a basic 2nd order slope.
    - A very hot gain that isn't clipping.

And drink some lemonade. Save compression for the mixing session.

This is a funny ass thread... LOL - Thanks for the MUCH BETTER process, Ghet.

BTW, noise reduction wasn't intended to be used the way most people here use it. You should never have to use noise reduction, unless you have to save a noisy recording that CAN'T be recorded again (i.e., the artist died after the recording was made). If the recording CAN be re-recorded, then you should try to isolate and eliminate the source of the noise and re-record a cleaner signal. It's just the best way to get a good mix...

I am by no means a pro engineer, but as far as I know, compression on a vocal track is quite common (almost necessary) in hip-hop and rap. The reason, I've been told, is that the vocal track in a rap song is intended to sound somewhat flat and uniform with respect to the loudness levels, so that it can better compliment the all-important drum/percussive tracks - This is unlike most other forms of music, where the vocal track should be more expressive. This is why haters of hip-hop and rap always criticize the "monotone" sound of the music, whereas fans of the music have a certain taste for this sound.
