    The War at Home

I wish you could see Little Rosalie,
    Youthful; she’d laugh uncontrollably,
She was the one others yearned to be,
    A phoenix, fiery…proud and free,
    And melancholy-
    Was never meant for she,
    Eyes wide open…
To the whole world there is to see,
Sitting at Starbucks drinking her tea,
    Lost in a novel…
    “The War at Home”…
    A calamity within a family,
And god fucking damn it she-
    Read it so fucking happily…

To her that mad house was a joke,
How the sputtering father would choke-
Upon saliva, while stricken with rage,
With each flick of the page…
She’d giggle and smile in utter denial,
That a happy home could ever rile-
And ruffle so many loving feathers,
Upon a couch bound in warming leathers,
    These problems were never hers,
    They were just caricatures-
    Which she found un-relatable-
To her, it was a world debatable…

She’d debate the reality of it all,
As the father drags his girl down the hall-
By her perfect blonde pony tail,
Breaking her pride, she’s alone and frail,
    The humiliating pain…
    Windows pelted by debilitating rain,
And Rosalie reads with no disdain,
Confused a bit, but she can’t attain-
The type of emotion you’d expect by now,
    Similarities to reality, but how?

She just never believed in the hell,
Envisioned from an eight by ten cell,
    Written in her father’s study,
A tale so cold, so awfully bloody,
Which told of her father’s desire,
    To taste little Rosalie’s fire…
    Setting her burning bush ablaze,
Her mind lost in a vicious maze,
    Encouraging her to guzzle mayonnaise,
    Because in under thirty days…
    Rosalie would be…

    Attractive no longer,
Dad would no longer wrong her,
    Left alone with the screams,
Long lost are her dreams…yet it seems,
That she’s still in a happy place,
As she desperately tries to keep face,
Being that it’s so hard to explain,
That she was raped; dancing in the rain,
By a father she thought cared,
After he wrote a novel which he shared-
    Only with her,
Revealing his plot; it’s now just a blur,
    Poor innocent her…
She never knew to seek protection
Yet the truth now lies in her eyes reflection,
    She now understands the tragedy,
And that my friend, is sad to see.
