Because most people act decent for only 2 reasons:

    1.) Fear of hell.

    2.) Fear of the law.

It's a damn shame. If people were decent on their own, without external pressures, then we'd live in a much better, and more authentic world.

    Fuckin bitches.

For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind

Eh, that's why our SYSTEM peddles it, but I hear ya.

Capitalism always preys on fear, man. Fear of being alone, fear of being fat...ya know, whatever.

But people wouldn't need God or religion if they weren't fearful of what happens to us after death.

Therefore, religion is based on fear. It's the fundamental buidling block.

EDIT: Capitalism AND the governemnt prey on fear. I totally agree w/ ya on the fear-mongering government idea...but the whole basis of capitalism is to make people feel as though they should be afraid that they're missing out on something

    It is kinda sad

I'm agnostic and have no idea if there is or isnt a god. I give money towards global hunger every month and I used to volunteer at a hospice....not because I fear hell (I think thats all bullshit) and not because I want rewards or praise from god (more bullshit)...
I do it because for some weird reason even though I know I wont get anything out of it as a human being I actually care about some starving people around the world who Ill never meet.....

Truly sad that so many self serving bastards need rewards or the threat of eternal damnation in order to have the decency to give a fuck about other people.

    Well.

"Capitalism" doesn't really prey and people's fears, it preys on people's greed, lust, and mediocrity. People are generally exploited with fear, no matter the construct.

The reason why things are the way they are is because we've developed a childish classist system based on absolutely nothing but the desire of those who have accumulated a lot of money to keep it. Their rationale is that in that we now have (and have had since the start of colonialism) a global economy, they are the most important component of domestic financial affairs. Hence, they've figured out a way to make all of the decisions. Unfortunately, everyone is following because they're all lame--and enough continue to in order to keep those who are enlightened from doing anything about it.

Fortunately, though, in that they got where they're at through various forms of scumbaggery rather than actual physical or mental superiority, their system is failing.

And that's why beans are a buck fifty a can, healthcare is a bill fifty a month, and education is one of the leading causes of debt early in life. If all these brainy men and women with >shudder<, work ethics come along and take over, why, we might actually have a stable society in which people like metal salesmen who exploit the deaths of thousands of people can't make all of the decisions! (And take everyone's money.)

Oh, and more to the point:

I think the imposition of religion is far more effective as a political device and a deterrent. I truly believe that in that we have truly evil, damaged ass people out there, we actually have productive members of society with honest intentions.

    @Eko

I feel you on all points w/ the exception of your first (which was a response to me).

In essence, we're on the same page. But I think that the driving force behind *most* greed is fear. That doesn't mean that fear in question is some all consuming, shit-your-pants fear, though. It's a subtle fear, probably a subconcious tick, mostly.

For instance, the only reasons for buying nice clothes are to impress women and as to not look less well off than those around you. Why? Fear of loneliness, fear of appearing inferior. If that weren't the case, the vast majority of us would walk around in rags, not giving a shit.

I'm not really talking about the industry of greed that boomed right after 9/11 (the gas masks, survivalist shit, ya know), even though that's a part of it, too.

I do feel good about helping other people, thats one of the rewards of caring...I don't do it cuz I expect some type of material or spiritual reward....about the only other reward besides self satisfaction would be being able to write off the money i give for charity when filing my taxes..but I dont even do that because I dont really feel like I should be given special privileges for giving money to people who need it..

You're wrong in a way but right in a way....I do feel good about myself but that's not the main motivation I have behind the things I do, thats just the inevitable benefit of it all. I didn't sit outside in 30 degree weather at night for 2 hours helping these 3 women put a donut on their car (they somehow stripped the lug nuts and all type of other shit to it) to simply feel good about myself....they needed help so I helped...they offered me money I said no...
If all I wanted was self satisfaction I would have done something much less demanding like doubled my action against hunger donation for that month or somethin...
So yeah you're right I give a chunk of my time and money to helping others and I feel very good about myself each and every day...I guess I'm quite a selfish person after all..
