    Loved or was in love? I think it's more common to love someone than to be in love with them. (note: I'm using Webster's definition - no debates please)

    I love the guy I'm with now to an extent - not to the point where I'd be ready to give him a kidney, but there is a deep affection.

    The difference between love and in love = the feeling is mutual.
