it's about that time to start compiling...

name your top films (and honorable mentions, worst film of the year, etc. if you care to)

here is a list of this year's films in case you can't remember all that you've seen off the top:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_in_film

    my top ten:

    1. before the devil knows your dead (directed by sidney lumet)
    2. the namesake (directed by mira nair)
    3. eastern promises (directed by david cronenberg)
    4. no country for old men (directed by the coen brothers)
    5. 3:10 to yuma (directed by james mangold)
    6. the savages (directed by tamara jenkins)
    7. juno (directed by jason reitman)
    8. grindhouse - double feature (directed by robert rodriguez & quentin tarantino)
    9. beowulf (directed by robert zemeckis)
    10. american gangster (directed by ridley scott)

note: i combined both grindhouse films as one, which may be a little fair since each standing alone isn't as good as some of the films below... but, as a total theater experience, the two features in combination were very enjoyable

    honorable mentions:

    - hot fuzz (directed by edgar wright)
    - superbad (directed by greg mottola)
    - black snake moan (directed by craig brewer)
    - the darjeeling limited (directed by wes anderson)
    - hairspray (directed by adam shankman)
    - mr. brooks (directed by bruce a. evans)
    - the brave one (directed by neil jordan)

    worst film of the year:

    - into great silence (directed by philip groning)

i have no idea what the critics were seeing, but this one put me straight to sleep. it could be because i entered it somewhat sleepy-eyed (big mistake), but i found the pace oppressively languid and certain images were held on screen far too long.... which says a lot i think since i'm a pretty patient viewer. great concept for a documentary, but it could have fulfilled more potential as the "visual poem" it wanted to be

there are many notable films that i missed this year

although, superbad at top 10, but black snake moan and hairspray as h.m.?

I can't be bothered to order these right now, but here's the best 10 movies I saw this year. Only ones I'm sure about as far as the order are those top 3.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
    No Country for Old Men
    3:10 to Yuma
The Simpsons Movie (met all expectations)
Knocked Up (maybe better than Superbad, imo)
    The Kingdom
    Beowulf (in 3-D)
The Lives of Others (way overlooked/underrated)
The Mist (this one surprised me)
    The Bourne Ultimatum

    Honorable Mentions
    Into the Wild
    Breach
    American Gangster
    Reign Over Me
    Sicko
Rush Hour (yes, Rush Hour 3)
    Shoot em Up (barely)
    Superbad
    Grindhouse

    The Worst
...one I saw is a tossup between The Brave One, The Number 23, or Lars and The Real Girl. But I didn't see any terrible movies this year, really.

I'm going to see Gone Baby Gone and 3:10 to Yuma soon, they'll probably bump a couple off the top 10. Also most likely gonna see Juno, I Am Legend and Charlie Wilson's War eventually.

And I'm mad I missed 'We Own the Night' while it was in theaters around here. Missed a few other well-rated ones, too.

    It was a good year.

    edit: just saw Yuma.

[IMG] @ the jeus leaving before the devil knows your dead off completely

yes, i enjoyed it more than both of those

it could have something to do with the fact that i'm heavily partial towards john waters' original... i thought john travolta was weak as mrs. turnblad. didn't live up to divine's standard, and it bugged me.

I'm waiting for juno, still isn't playing around here.

Brah, have you seen the original 3:10 to Yuma? Is it worth checking out if I've seen the update?
