No you will get a smaller number by dividing a whole number.
When using multiplication, if its anything less than 1, you are no longer multiplying but rather dividing.
When mutiplying, it has to be a whole *1* or higher.
    .5 x 1 is dividing 1 by .5 since ".5" is less than a whole.
There's no such thing as multiplying a pie in half.
To get half of a pie you have to divide the whole pie.

*im done replying. If anyone disagrees with the above example then you are really unlearned and need to go talk to your former/present math teacher instead of trying to understand punchlines and write gun-bussing raps*

^^ur actually correct to a point... but what ur failing to realize is that it's when u take .5 x 1 it's still called multiplication

The only "multiplication" is the process of "multiplying" the ".5" time "1".
    But 1 x .5 is division.
You're diving the 1 in half.

Only number(s) 1 and greater is when the order doesnt matter.
    (1 x 2 or 2 x 1).

When did I say I cared? It's just that "3 minutes of battle rap=$1,500" is absurd to me. I don't give a fuck if they get money, good for them.

Using no fractions (because apparently they are confusing for some), I can multiply a number by another number and get a smaller number.

    2*-2=-4

Can anyone argue that this simple operation involves any sort of division?

Assuming the answer is no, I have just proven that there are numbers that are smaller than 1 that can be used for multiplication.

    I'm the modern day L'Hopital.

EDIT: FlyinHawaiian, when you multiply 1/1 by 1/2, you multiply both the numerators and denominators with each other. It is the same as multiplying 3/1 by 3/1.

Now, if you want to divide 1/1 by 1/2, you have to flip 1/2 so it becomes 2/1 and then multiply the numerators and denominators by each other.

Your argument does not make sense because everything can be written as a fraction. So there can always theoretically be division by 1 after two numbers are multiplied together. That is why your argument does not make sense, you are claiming that fractions cannot be multiplied like they are fundamentally different than other numbers, but actually, all numbers can be written as fractions.

(and yes, my edit is saying that you can actually divide what I wrote originally. But at that point I hadn't read the rest of your argument, I was writing that using your definition of multiplication.)
I quite enjoy this discussion actually.

    is this guy trolling?

when you DIVIDE something by .5 you actually DOUBLE IT. Put it in a calculator.

and D-lor already explained how your original point was faulty. 2 * -4 = -8. -8 is smaller than both numbers. can you explain how that's something other than multiplication?

    @ FLYINHAWAIIAN

do u know that 8-4 is the same as 8+(-4) but the basic concept of addition says when u add two things ur not suppose to end up with less than.

thats exactly what ur saying about multiplication.

but after elementary school they teach u pass the basic concepts of addition because addition doesnt stop at the basics.

I say that to say, it seems u only know the basic concept of multiplication, the stuff they teach u to get started.
