She first appeared in Above the Rim with Tupac Shakur as a teenager and was hooked. She then went and pursued a career as a journalist where she wrote for Vibe, The Source, Elemental, The Ave, and One World Magazines. She later became a founder of Femmixx.com, the Home Of Female Music Producers, DJs & Emcees. Wilkes directed and executive produced "Lady Beat Makers Vol. 1," a documentary on female urban music producers and received an Impact of Women in Hip Hop Award for the groundbreaking documentary at the Hip Hop Culture Center located at the Magic Johnson Theater in Harlem . Wilkes received her Impact Award along with Mc Lyte, Roxanne Shante, DJ Jazzy Joyce, Danyel Smith, Vibe editor and other phenomenal women. A maverick in many ways - Tachelle "Shamash" Wilkes is known for her trailblazing projects. She later co-founded She's My DJ Turntablist Mix & Scratch Battle along with Danielle Brantley of Mocha Works Marketing. She’s My DJ garnered support from individuals in the hip hop community such as Dj Red Alert, Ralph McDaniels, and Funk Master Flex. As an artist she has opened for KRS-One and Doug E. Fresh and has been featured in media such as Scratch Magazine, Amsterdam Newspaper, BBC Radio, WWRL Radio, ABC News, and NBC. Now a high school teacher and former college professor she is a believer in using hip-hop as a vehicle and healing infused education. Tachelle continues to be dedicated to the youth and her community. She holds a BA in English with a concentration in secondary education from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University and an MA in American Literature from Brooklyn College.
