    Her name is Jazmine Sullivan...

    "Prototype" Cover.
    "Round Midnight" Cover.
    "Resentment" Cover.

The thing I love about her aside from monstrous raw vocal ability is the subtlety in her voice. The control she has over her phrasing is also very impressive. She has the presence of a singer twice her age. Couple all of that with distinct smoky vocals, great range, a flair for harmony and her respect for her predecessors in various genres and you have the recipe for a next-gen R&B artist.

I got a new for you, Ix. What do you know about Alice Smith? I think she sounds (on one listen) like a musical cross between Robert Randolph and Corinne Bailey Rae, with stronger vocals than either. Have you heard her?

she was on rolling stone's list of new artists to watch in 2006. i just happened to see her cd in borders and took a shot. after listening a few more times, i'd say she's more like a female version of robin thicke, not really comfortable/confinable in any one genre.

    From the rolling stone article:
"Smith could easily be lumped in with expressive chanteuses like Norah Jones and Alicia Keys, but she has a broader palette than either. On the soulful torch song "Dream," which Smith wrote, she conveys a sophisticated allure that would seem well beyond her twenty-seven years. Rock-cabaret tunes like "Gary Song" and "New Religion" show off Smith's four-octave range, and her reggae-loving uncle gets props on the dub-influenced "Do I." In concert, wearing jeans and a T-shirt, she effortlessly fills the room with her booming alto, channeling Nina Simone one minute, Mick Jagger the next."

    I like Alice Smith. She's a tweener.
She seems to be quite versatile.

    Most definitely.

I've been trying to compose a list of obscure artists for a good friend of mine.
He's really hard on R&B at the moment and he's threatening to swear off of it entirely.

    Have any suggestions?

Ixtlan, you can look for his myspace page.

He does a cover of Donny Hathaway's " A song for you"... it's nice.

I'm not sure if it's still on the page but there's another song of his ( I don't know if it's a cover or not) called " I could get used to"... and it blew me away.

I'll look for it now and post it in a minute if I find it, Ix.

--- seems like the Donny Hathaway cover is no longer on the page.

He's got a lot of vocal talent, but he's young, so we'll see what path his career takes. He's an above average talent, but it's not hard to end up being just another run-of-the-mill talent when you get in the game at 17, and other people make decisions for you ( yes, I'm presuming here)

the only suggestions i'd have you already know probably. depends what his tastes are other than r&b, but try out james hunter, he's kind of throwback to 50's rock & roll, maybe. i've been a fan of both anthony david records and both amos lee albums, he's sort of on the fringe between r&b and folk. raul midon has an interesting pop-r&b sound. ummm....a new Philly artist named V backed by Jazzy Jeff. I didn't really care for his album that much outside of 2 or 3 songs (sounds to me like a watered down Eric Roberson or Dwele) but other people on Amazon and other places seem to enjoy it, so it might connect with that friend.

That's pretty much all I've got right now.

Eric Roberson was someone I already had in mind.

He won't go for the hybrid types.
He was a huge fan of the edgier R&B acts of the 90's. Jodeci, R. Kelly...
Any male vocalist with a softer side (ie, John Legend), vintage clothing (ie, Bilal) or the whole "earthy" vibe will scare him off.
So this is a fairly daunting task.
