i'm not refusing to accept anything he said. some of it you can say matches our current situation, but nothing that couldn't have been predicted without inside information. a lot of what he said is outdated and/or never came to fruition. of course if you have selective hearing you can say he predicted the fiscal irresponsibility while ignoring the details of his conspiracy which were seemingly based on an outdated fear of communism. for example higher and higher taxes... the actual trend has been the exact opposite.

i don't know the exact answer to your question, i thought you were bringing it up because you did.

my understanding is that the major taxes we have today also existed back then and from what i've seen they were generally higher back then with the exception of payroll taxes.

try to keep in mind how this conversation started. the video might have made more sense back then because taxes were actually really high and communism was seemingly still a plausible threat. but his vision didn't come true. instead, reagan was elected and implemented tax cuts. of the presidents who have been in office since reagan, only clinton tried to move the tax rate in the other direction. obama might try this as well. even so, neither of them has or will try to return to the kind of rates they had when that speech was made.
