I'm looking to buy a laptop for just producing and I heard that •••••s are a lot better than PCs, but I don't know if that's true or not, is it? I was lookin at the Powerbook.

Future music magazine had a good article on this a few months back. In terms of raw power your powerbook is gonna be alot less powerful than your PC desktops of today. However your single processor PC desktops will in no way match the power of a dual processor G5. In the test they conducted at Future music they quoted the following in terms of plugin polyphony:

Pentium 4(2.66GHz)- 31 instances of Arturia Minimoog V

Athlon Xp 3200+ 2.2 GHz- 31 instances of Arturia Minimoog V

    ••••• G4 powerbook 867 MHz- 16 Instances of Arturia Minimoog V

    ••••• G5 dual 2.2 GHz- 75 instances of Arturia Minimoog V

There are also alot of differences in terms of the OS and software available for each platform. Right now, not too many Windows programs support Dual core 64 bit machines, so you will have to wait if you plan on buying a dual core system for PC. If you plan on using any digidesign products you must be VERY picky when piecing together a system so that you can make sure that it will work smoothly with Pro tools. For example i notice on my Pc(pentium V 3.0 GHz) when i use pro tools for merely audio it can handle all 32 tracks offered by Pro tools LE. However when i try to use pro tools for a scratch pad and actually start using plugins such as minimoog v, my system usage is extremely high(mid 90%) with one instance of minimoog, and one instance of Guru. When I use Cubase to do the same thing on the same system my CPU usage is around 50%. Another thing to consider is if you wanted to use a dedicated program such as Logic pro 7 for beats, you would not have this option on Pc since logic is no longer supported on PC. One final thing to remember is that ••••• will be moving to intel processors soon so we should see some substantial gains in performance from that side.

Well, it's probably gonna be used mainly for mixing and my drums and stuff.

I'm planning on getting a Fantom.

Would you suggest a Dell or other type of laptop or just wait all together?

dell is err shite unless you know what to take off their list of crap they add.

take a look at the acer travelmate 8100 series i have one seriously fast and a lovely screen, dunno how much they are in the states though.

but i would definately say unless you want to run mac only apps the laptops aren't really cutting it atm.

Nah, all the applications I'm interested in I think are on both PC and Mac so it doesn't really matter to me.
