how do you tell a family that their child definitely ain't goin to heaven?

"my son was an angel, and now is with God"

uh...your son killed 3 people before he was shot by the cops.

i definitely could never stomach sayin that shit to someone, nor bein like "none of your family members are watchin over you."

sorry, but not everyone goes to heaven. in fact, most will go to hell. also, don't think in either case they'd have the time or ability or memory to be like "i want to check on so-and-so and protect them."

Like, how would that conversation go?

"I'm so very sorry about your aunt. It must be hard on the entire family. Well, she is with God now, in heaven, and I'm sure she's watching over-"
    "She's in hell."
    "Pardon me?"
    "Yeah she was an atheist."

Regardless of whether you believe in heaven or not, when someone has had a loved one die, it's not a time to challenge their beliefs, leave them to their grief, you could just make it worse for them.
