^Did you ever pick up the Dilla joints released this year? Donuts and The Shining?

I have The Shining... I still need to get Donuts. I'm gonna cop Madlib's Beat Konducta, Vols. 1-2, as well... I'm gettin' into DJ/instrumental albums more.

What you think about Madlib? Lemme guess... you don't like him.

I think you don't like simple loops over drum beats, which is probably why you hate "Guerilla Monsoon Raps." You prefer those grand, multi-layered beats with shifting melodies, right?

To me, it ain't always the beat but how the MC rocks them... and how you can ignore the rhyming on GMR amazes me, as well.

No, unfortunately I don't own either of them.
I've heard "Donuts". I was actually a bit disappointed.

    I don't. I never have.
I simply don't get the fascination with that guy.
A friend of mine has every piece of material he ever recorded.
He even managed to snag a beat disc Madlib sent out to artists in the industry.

That Quasimoto stuff is asswax man.
The silly ass voice he does is annoying. Normally I don't care how an emcee sounds, but that shit drives me nuts.

I think his brother, Oh No, is crushing him on the beats.
    That kid's underrated.

I'll give ML credit though. I loved "The Official" from the JayLib album.
That beat is absolutely nuts. He stuck his foot in that one...

I've also seen his lecture at the RedBull Music Academy. Fascinating stuff.
He had a great interview. If you haven't seen the lectures by all means check their website out. I saw a recent interview with Just Blaze that was a must see...

The thing I don't like about ML I suppose is the perception fans have of him.
They see him as this super musical genius and I don't get it.
Most of his tracks are just loops. That's fine and well, I'm not a detractor of loop diggers. I'm just saying. That don't make dude a genius (though he is an impeccable digger).

I will say this. I'm a big Yesterday's New Quintet fan (Lib's band).
So I guess my answer to your question is "yes" and "no".

I like some of his tracks and the YNQ stuff, but overall I'm not a cult follower of his.

Not necessarily. Honestly my weakness is the musicality in all of it.
I like producers who layer tracks well. Doesn't have to be lots of layers... I just believe there's an art to using them (Pete Rock, Dre).

I think my favorite tracks over the past 10 years have been the tracks that incorporate both sampling and composition (ie, Dilla/Hi-Tek/Kanye).

I can get into something simple just as quickly as something more complex in form. No ID's "Smile" is the perfect example. That track was insane and it was as basic as track can get. That's the simplest loop a producer can find. And the original incarnation of that track had no change-ups in it. It was later edited once it was officially released to radio and television.

The emcees come off on the track, but that beat messes it up for me.
    I'm sorry.

^Yes, get it... he kinda sparked the "neo-soul" trend, which quickly became played out... but that album is butter, no question.

His style is almost rivaled by none. If he can say no to drugs, then why not. Society always find some way to forgive.

Don't know what people are talking about, but Voodoo was amazing front to back...no one mentions "spanish joint." If he can come back with a similar sound I'll cop the album in a heartbeat. He and Maxwell can't be touched.

    Pssshhhtt...

    "Voodoo" was doo-doo...
He started believing his own hype.
That album is gab-bage when compared to his debut.

He needs to simplify the formula and stop trying to be bigger than the music.
Take Prince's dick out of your mouth and be you D.

Bilal poses no real threat, as he doesn't have the cult following or name value, but artistically that dude is running stride for stride with D'Angelo.

I remember reading an article a few years back where D'Angelo pulled a Bobby Brown and starting dissin' his competition like Bilal, Chico DeBarge, and a few others... he said they were copying his style.

I thought about re-coppin' "Voodoo" to give it another chance... sometimes, my tastes and sensibilities change through time... but I just never get around to it.

I read the same article. I think that was an old Vibe piece.
Bilal's name wasn't in that group though (if memory serves).

Unless he made a similar statement recently...

Do you and stop worrying about everybody else.

I can't believe that no one really likes VooDoo...

"Send it On" would be on a cd of my favorite songs possibly... ever... This is one of my favorite cds possibly... ever...

It wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm going to try and listen to this Bilal now... never heard.
