...to change their mind, what would you play?"

Somebody asked me this via formspring.me . Thought it was a great question.

So many factors to take into consideration. I think you'd first have to know WHY the person doesn't like hip hop.

Some people are convinced rappers talk about nothing except money, women, and violence. Obviously you'd have to pick a song that talks about none (or, perhaps, criticizes those that do).

Some people complain that rap isn't music. A good choice would be something that's pretty melodic. And probably a song that isn't a sample of an older popular song with a drum beat thrown on top of it.

I supposed you'd also have to take into consideration the type of music they DO like. For jazz-heads, you find something jazzy. For rockers, you play them something with some crazy guitars.

And I supposed you'd want to maintain your integrity. I mean...if the person is a rock fan, you could play some rap/rock hybrid that sucks and sounds closer to Limp Bizkit...but that isn't really exposing them to "hip hop" (thought it may re-affirm hip hop's influence in popular/white culture). You could play some top 40 rap song that has universal "shake your booty" appeal, but I think it'd be nice to show off what hip hop has to offer and not the picture painted by top 40 radio on a daily basis.

    What would YOU choose??

I couldn't even answer this question because there are so many different types of rap and hip-hop that you could only convert someone if you play something that's similar to what they currently enjoy.

But on a pseudo-side note, a lot of people that I know who don't like rap or hip-hop know and like Immortal Technique.

Though to be fair, that may be a tad overrated because of the shock value that "Dancing With The Devil" left on them. He does have some sick stuff, though! OBNOXIOUS NIGGA

good one. You can satisfy the "rap ain't real music" folks with anything by The Roots and the content is semi-universal.

Not gonna win over a good chunk of the white rocker crowd with this one though.

Is there a UNIVERSAL song? To convince people?

Planet Rock...on some "one nation under a groove" type shit? haha

I think I Used To Love H.E.R. could work too. The fact that Common is himself being critical of rap might sort of add to the appeal.

I don't know, sometimes even I don't want to listen to Common.

Maybe Kanye has a song that I can't think of.

Originally, I was thinking of a Talib song.

I keep thinking of people from my past who stated they didn't like rap. A lot of them didn't like it for on reason...it was black music.

So yeah...likely not changing those people's minds.

Of course I know super-conservative, George W. Bush loving people who also listen to Rage Against The Machine because they "rock hard, dude".

like others have said, there are some many sub-genres of rap/hip hop, that it would be near impossible to pick the right song unless you know why that person does not like hip hop to begin with.

the best way to go is to find a track with not just good "hip hop" qualities, but with good overall music qualities
