Their are basically two schools when it comes to this - you are either

    1. Self taught - you experimented, researched, and practiced until you became at least decent.
    or
    2. Taught by someone else - you've taken a class in music and might have gotten a few lessons.

I come from a family with litterally no musical background, lol. So I'm pretty much self taught.

What category do you fall under?

Self Taught... I've picked up tips on mixing and seen how others do certain things... but the majority of my beat making is self taught... which is probably why I know very little technical shit... like chord progression..etc... but ah well... what ever works...

Self taught... 90% of whut i do with my beatmaking has been learned thru me fuckin around wit FL, plugins, and experimenting... I had band, and i played sax... but the only 2 things that helps you wit when it comes to beatmaking is:
    1. Knowing whut a bar is, and how to measure it
    2. You get a ear for when notes clash, and when they harmonize... cant spell but fuck it lol

Self taught , I was always interested in making beats , until I finally got my hands on FL and I was making beats for days upon days. My shit was crap , I used to post my shit on here and people would point out my flaws , thats how I got better

until I finally just learned , but this is what I didn; I first messed wtih FL until I knew how to make a beat , kick , snare, hi hat , melody , bassline , extra elements. Once I knew what is the foundation of a beat and started making decent beats. I bought an mp-7 and a midi controller, from there I bought the mpc1000 , and everything else along with it

I was most def self taught, didnt no body really give me shit , I used to make beats with NOVISS drum kits lmaoo , how pathetic lolll

but hey we all start some where

I been rapping way before I even made a beat and I been making beats for 3 close to 4 years and some months

As far as music (beats, bars, chords, all that good shit) I taught myself everything...

But for stuff like actual equipment and hardware and being smart about buying it, I was taught by the best.

    self taught.

but you have to admit, a lot of the stuff we do is simple as hell. like findin a nice sample, loopin it and puttin drums on top..really you just need to know how to work the equipment. obviously it's often more than that but we're hardly self-taught classical violin maestros.

the biggest skill (more like an ability) is just knowing what sounds good and what doesn't.
