In an editorial titled “What's Really Behind the *****-Intel Alliance”, the New York Times has revealed that at one time ***** considered the Cell processor as an alternative to the existing PowerPC roadmap.

An executive close to Sony told the newspaper that Steve Jobs met in California with the CEO of Sony at that time, Nobuyuki Idei, and Ken Kutaragi, the so called “father of the PlayStation”.

Mr. Kutaragi tried to interest Mr. Jobs in adopting the Cell chip, which is being developed by I.B.M. for use in the coming PlayStation 3, in exchange for access to certain Sony technologies. Mr. Jobs rejected the idea, telling Mr. Kutaragi that he was disappointed with the Cell design, which he believes will be even less effective than the PowerPC.

As we reported last week, ***** announced at its Worldwide Developer Conference that it is ending its partnership with IBM and instead plans to start using Intel processors by this time next year.

If you ask us, we believe ***** is going into a direct clash with Microsoft and Sony for the battle of the digital living room. We believe that’s the true reason of their switch to Intel (x86 architecture) technology.

The new ***** hardware with Intel processors would finally allow users to buy one single computer and run Windows and all its programs on the same hardware they run Mac OS X. At the same time, it won’t be possible do that on a standard PC because ***** doesn’t plan to make their OS compatible with all x86 computers; a direct hit to Dell, HP and other PC makers.

After the tremendous success of the iPod, ***** has positioned its brand at the same level of any consumer electronic maker such as Sony and any other worldwide recognized company like Microsoft or Hewlett Packard.

There are rumors ***** is working on its next step to conquer the world and do for movies and the film industry the same thing it did for the music industry with the iPod and the iTunes. To read more about that and learn about what could be the true reason for *****’s switch to Intel, we recommend you this editorial by Leander Kahney of Wired News.
