This is the list of 100 greatest guitarists of all time from the Rolling stones magazine.....

    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5937559/the_100_greatest_guitarists_of_all_time

First of all..I completely agree with number 1..

couple disagreements...how the fuck does Jack white and Kurt Cobain get that high on the list yet Eddie Van Halen is at # 70??

although Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck are pretty high on the list...looking back at the 2 together even before Zeppelin they will go down as some of the innovators of metal so they should've been even higher...

    Your thoughts??

I saw that list when it came out mad years ago and I wondered why Prince wasn't included. His guitar skills are mad slept on.

Hendrix should be 1-100 actually. No one else really matters.

^I wouldn't say that. Hendrix isn't for everybody.

Wes Montgomery should've been on there, as well.

I agree with Prince, but I believe Prince's guitar playing skills were pretty overshadowed by, well, Prince ...

Also Randy Rhoads and Joe Perry deserves to be much higher...

and I just realized that there's no Dimebag...

That's THE WORST list of all time.

I'm the biggest Nirvana fan this planet has ever seen, but he wasn't a geetar virtuoso by any means- he just excelled at melody.

Hendrix was great in ways that many people don't acknowledge. Michael Jordan once said something about he didn't practice his moves, they just happened. That describes Hendrix's guitar playing perfectly. One year he was being laughed at on stage, the next he was sustaining a note with his foot while being handed another Strat.

    Prince is nothing special.

Great point... I was gonna say that, but decided not to.

Also, if you go by his recorded output, I can see why he would be slighted... Prince said that his label restricted his playing and that he couldn't really stretch like he wanted to... however, the man is a beast live and is a lot better than many of the names on the list.

On TV. I've never been impressed.

I'm not a fan of his music, so going to a live show isn't a priority of mine.

Though i'm no fan of shred-metal, most shred metal guitarists credit Perry's work on "Back in the Saddle" as a huge influence. I loved that little eastern-influenced solo break in "Livin' on the Edge."

    Then you really can't judge.

His guitar playing on his albums are pretty much stifled due to label conflicts... I'm sure the recorded medium isn't the only way these musicians have been judged.

Even then, he didn't really break out like he can.

I went to his concerts in '88 and '94... both were off the meter.

Being a player myself, I have more of a right to judge than the typical internet know-it-all. I have no problem with Prince fans, but I won't drink that kool-aid.

    Haha.

He embodies the cheesiness of the 80's.

because one plays doesn't always mean one is more fit to judge

there was a time when all great players hadn't picked up a guitar, and their sense for music had great influence in their development

anyway, i find that artists can sometimes be the worst critics of the field they're in, because they tend to get wrapped up in their own style a little too heavily and sometimes lose appreciation for other forms of expression
