    I was going to make a thread about this yesterday, but wanted to wait for effect.

    It was going to be titled, "The Government has been shut down for X amount of hours..."
    And the OP would read;
    "And it still doesn't make a difference, just shows how ineffective our government is that it can NOT work and it wouldn't make a difference."

    But then this happened so there's my thread in your thread cuz I heard you liked threads.

    i still don't get how a government can shut down like that, what does it mean to have a shut down government.

    does this mean they can no longer act upon their policies or laws that they have?

    does it effect their borrowing powers, or foreign influence?

    somebody needs to ctrl+alt+delete and restart.

    they don't shut down the whole govt, just parts of it that are deemed 'non-essential.' among the non-essential functions are things like NASA and national parks/museums. ironically enough, obamacare is not affected.

    ah, okay.

    how do the republicans have the power to do this though?

    i couldn't imagine liberal claiming that labor government is shut down, and it actually happens.

    congress has to pass a bill approving the budget each year for discretionary spending. both the house of representatives and the senate have to pass the bill. the house is currently controlled by the republicans and the senate by the democrats. so either side can theoretically refuse to pass the bill, effectively shutting part of the government down. it's basically a bluff though. somebody is going to have to fold eventually.
