Jennifer Lopez was a staple in Hollywood. It's much easier to parlay her success in that world over to the music world. She had name value.

Britney Spears is the exception to the rule, but on the whole it'd be much harder to sell audiences on Ashanti than it would Kelly Rowland.

Then why is Ashanti a consistent chart-topper and platinum-seller?

Now she can sing. And her new joint's sexy as hell. I think it's called, "feels like the first time".

Beats and Hooks. she is the R&B version of JaRule. She can't sing.. like JaRule can't rap. But they both make catchy hooks and have songs with good beats. It's a formula people with less talent can use to get by in the industry. Just like.. the dudes who made "White T" song.

I agree. Bought ciara's lbum... 4 out of 12 good songs. and we've already heard the first 3. In all her songs she sounds like she's rapping. she's needs singing lessons, better voal arrangement and writers. Can't say i was disappointed, because I didn't know what to expect.

I understand all of that... I know how the industry works... I was just asking Ixt why he thinks it's harder to market a talent-less hack... I don't think that it is, which is why I brought up J-Lo, Britney, and Ashanti as evidence.

As I said... There's an exception to every rule.
I could name 2 talented singers for every Ashanti.

Even though a couple of them have slipped through the cracks, I still believe the industry is comprised of mostly talented vocalists.

Because it is. There aren't many singers of note with Ashanti's success.
It's Ashanti and Ciara. That's about where it ends.
I'd throw Alicia Keys in, but I'd be hanged on a cross.

Most people think she's this incredible vocalist. I beg to differ.

True dat... and dare I say??... Mary J. Blige.... shorty be havin' catchy tunes, sorrowful tunes that the sisters down the block can relate to, but she can barely carry a tune when you hear her live.

In fact, I think Alicia Keys tries to imitate MJB more than anybody else.

You're looking at it wrong. There's seems to be a shift in emphasis from pure vocal talent to average vocal ability with great production. So there seems to be a trend in R&B that points to artists becoming less talented and have more "sex appeal" (image). With the advancement of technology and the role of the producer, you can easily mask (to the general audience) the vocal talent of an artist.

I agree that there are probably more talented artists out there in the industry, but the number is decreasing, I think. I could be wrong.

Quite a few Mary impersonators have shown up in recent years.

Namely Keys, Amerie and Ms. Dynamite.

Mary's been able to have long-term success because she's captured the most valuable asset one can have. Her ability to connect with the listener. That alone, makes her one of the greatest R&B/Soul artists of our time.

I don't buy it. There simply is no recording equipment that can compensate for a untalented vocalist. You simply cannot create something from nothing.

Certainly you can pitch-correct and level off, but you can't hide the fact that an artist simply can't sing.

If you could we'd never pick fun at artists like Lumidee or Ashanti.

The number's increasing. It's just the industry is so saturated it's hard to tell.

    Actually I did.

Alicia Keys is a standout performer. I've seen her play live.
That doesn't constitute great chops though...

Usher's live shows are pretty dope, but he sounds like butt during them.

Alicia Keys is an average singer at best.

She is a great performer though.
