The good ones are fewer and farther between...

Seemed like there was a growing class of talented young sirens.
They've all been waylaid by a bunch of talentless vocalists like Brooke Valentine, Tyra and Ciara.

Nivea, extremely talented, but her product leaves a lot to be desired.
Lil' Mo, her 'disappearing acts' have become far too common.
Meelah (of 702), in hiding threatening to never release her solo LP.
Mya, she must be hanging out with Lil' Mo.

Is it just me or does it seem like the truly talented female vocalists have taken a back seat to their lesser talented cohorts?

I agree...Brooke Valentine, Ciara, and Tyra have good club or riding songs but not much more than that. I would not buy any of their albums.

Where is Deborah Cox? Lil Mo is mia alot as stated above, Whitney we all know what going on there, Mary always leaves us wanting more and is not far behind Lil Mo in the mia catagory. I also like Tamia, Monifah, and Monica but they have also faded into the background

From the tone of your post, you seem to think that it is of the vocalists own choice that they have "taken a back seat," but that's definitely not the case. You must turn your attention to the music industry and their marketing agendas to see who is at fault for scarcity of pure vocalists from the public light.

    That's just it though Speedy.

Pure vocalists aren't scarce. There are plenty of them.
I'm just wondering where they all are.

And, yes, I do think it's at least partly their fault for fading to black.
Many of them have simply taken extended vacations.

Step up to the plate and make these talentless trolls pull a chair up.
Kelly Price, Faith, Ketara Wyatt, Mya, Monica, Brandy, Lil' Mo...
    Do your thing.

Beyonce and Fantasia have done their bid.

And contrary to popular opinion... It's much harder to market a singer of inferior vocal ability than it is one like Monica.

the labels are scared. they don't know what to do with a great talent.

if they put out an album that bombs (a high probability due to current record company accounting), they'll lose money and their jobs. if the album becomes successful, the file sharers on the internet will eat their profits down to nothing.

finally, realize the music industry is run by accountants and lawyers who couldn't tell the difference between kelly price and a tin can being thrown down a flight of stairs. it's profound how out of touch most music execs are with music. all they care about is return on investment, which is no longer guaranteed due to reason #1.

many of today's young singers have their careers in limbo due to factors that have nothing whatsoever to do with talent or even marketability.

It all comes down to the ability to move product.
But you'd think the odds would get better with more talented artists right?

    I gotta be honest though.

I'll give one of the less than talented vocalists a pass.
    Amerie...

She's not Ashanti-bad, but the girl leaves a lot to be desired vocally.
    She has incredible material though.

That girl's work is very, very impressive.
Maybe it's because she's got Rich Harrison behind her.

    His production is just chaos.
Her first album was amazing. If you don't have it...you're a lost soul.

Another thing to think about - The C&C Music Factory originally put a more attractive woman in their music videos to lipsync for the obese actual singer.

And a good analogy I heard was:

"You can train an actor in martial arts, but you can't make a martial artist an actor."

The translation doesn't ring true, except in very special cases.

If I read you correctly, J-Lo and Britney Spears disprove that theory.

    Image over talent, remember?

in this day and age image> substance. Back in the day if you could not sing you could not have a singing career and that was that. Now with technology being the way it is you can create studio singers. People who only sound great in the studio. The formula is find a beautiful girl get a great producer behind the board and have her pose half-naked on the album cover and its a wrap. Plus the execs like artist with inferior talent because it makes them easier to mold. The less talent they have the easier it is to get them to do what you want.

Its the same way with hip-hop. 50 Cent has been shot nine times and has beef with many artists. But what about his lyrical content. Its poor and very pre-school. But they have been able to cover that behind bullets and beef. Its all smoke and mirrors.

Same thing with the R&B singers of today. Yea they look good and the production is awesome but what about they're voices or the lyrics? Poor. The smoke and mirrors technique is put in place here to.

Unfortunately I've noticed some good singers taking the same path less than talented singers take just to stay competitive. In the end the music suffers the most. I guess quality doesn't count as much as it used to.

There shouldn't be any complains and moaning, because not every artist is like that.. deal with it, thats the industry, most won't have longitivity, then some will improve and will stay around.

[sarcasm]That's the best mindframe ever! If nobody talks about it, it's not really a problem![/sarcasm]

    Please.

Just because you guys like what's out, doesn't mean people who DON'T don't have the right to complain.

People need to speak out for shit that bothers them.
