Fedor Emelianenko will return to the Strikeforce cage on Feb. 12, as he takes on Antonio Silva in a heavyweight main event from the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J.

Sources close to the negotiations informed Sherdog.com Sunday evening of the event’s date and location.

A match between former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett is also said to be in the works for the February date. It remains to be seen how the New Jersey Athletic Control Board handles the licensing situation Barnett -- who allegedly tested positive for a performance enhancing substance prior to a scheduled bout with Emelianenko in the summer of 2009 -- is dealing with in California. His hearing before the California commission was pushed back at their Dec. 2 meeting.

As speculated, Strikeforce will indeed hold an eight-man heavyweight tournament in 2011, and Emelianenko-Silva and Arlovski-Barnett are set to serve as quarterfinal bouts. Though the remaining combatants could not be confirmed, a third quarterfinal matchup between Fabricio Werdum and Brett Rogers is expected to take place in Columbus, Ohio, on a planned March 5 event.

A fourth and final tournament bout is also set to take place on the March card. Semi-final and final bouts would then be held later in the year at to-be-announced events.

The promotion will also hold two alternate bouts in case injury sidelines competitors in the main draw. Potential contestants could include “Challengers” series standouts Lavar Johnson, Daniel Cormier and Shane del Rosario.

Regarded by many as the greatest heavyweight in the history of the sport, Emelianenko was shocked by Werdum, a heavy underdog, in June, losing for the first time in a decade. Though the sambo specialist floored the Brazilian early in the first period, his follow-up was a bit too aggressive. As Emelianenko attempted to finish the fight with his trademark ground-and-pound, the savvy jiu-jitsu black belt avoided the blows and caught the Russian in a textbook triangle choke. Emelianenko holds notable victories over Mirko Filopovic, Arlovski and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (twice).

Silva is fresh off a come-from-behind win over King of the Cage light heavyweight champion Mike Kyle on Dec. 4 in St. Louis. Taking the fight on just five days' notice, Kyle shocked spectators by landing a crisp right hand to the jaw of the heavily-favored Brazilian, knocking him to the mat. Though the American Kickboxing Academy product pounced with heavy punches and hammer fists, the mammoth Silva would not give up. Round two was all “Bigfoot,” as the former EliteXC champion lived up to his moniker by dropping brutish blows on Kyle's skull and forcing a referee stoppage.

So Mike Ran of EE told me those matchups listed are false, other than Fedor vs Bigfoot, that's gonna happen.

He said EE will make the official announcement themselves tomorrow along with the real Grand Prix matches/bracket and a microsite for the Grand Prix

And he said yes, it will be refered to as a Grand Prix, not tournament

    hi

Hopefully, but I doubt it. You know Fedor breaks his hand during every fight he has these days.

I said it right after Fedor's loss and I'll say it again.... I feel sorry for his next opponent. He lost that comfort of feeling unbeatable. I feel like he's going to punch someones head off their body.

Yeah i been sayin that shit too, hes hungry again. A hungry fedor is a dangerous fedor. He'll win the tourny by destruction.

Finals will be Fedor vs Barnett

I love the way the bracket is set up
fedor vs overeem in round 2
and no rematch between rogers and fedor/overeem

finals will be fedor or overeem vs barnett
with the winner of the fedor vs overeem bout taking the gold

are the lines out? i havent looked but if fedor is a heavy favorite im puttin money on silva

i wanna say theres no way he'll lose, but he did lose in a quick sub which i know if it didnt happen he'd beat werdums lame ass but against rogers he looked shaky in his performance.. he almost got finished whether anyone wants to believe and admit it or not, yeah he turned it into an armbar attempt but he was lucky he had that opportunity..

if silva gets him in that same position.. he WILL finish..

i think a lot of you will be surprised when the finals comes around and nobody you thought would be in it will be.. altho im saying overeem will be, im seeing a lot of fedor/barnett though.. haha, if barnett isn't as washed as i think he is he should make finals he's been given a walkthrough almost, at least for the prime barnett, i dont know what he'll do against real competition anymore hate me but i said it hes not what you think in 2011

his last noteworthy win in my opinion is monson, thats in 2008 then nog in 2006.. we all knew he was gonna destroy yvel, and im not a fan of rizzo at this age. as much as i dislike that side of the bracket they are a step up from them guys right now.

Things that scares me about overeem is how focused he's been on kickboxing.

hopefully he hasnt sacrificed his overall game.

Rogers literally landed 3 out of 14 shots in that lil ground and pound flurry, fedor was nowhere near being finished

^You'd be amazed at how few people notice that.

Fedor came closer to finishing there than Rogers did.

haha ok watch when silva beats fedor

regardless rogers had him in dominating positions, fedors win came on a timed shot in the 2nd round, which was the result of feeling out his standup. he wont get that much time to feel out antonio silva because if he gets in them positions he will finish and his standup is much better than rogers whos reach gave fedor problems early. few times he swung and caught complete air well rogers just threw in a quick jab, silva will capitalize on things rogers didnt, expect combos where rogers just snuck in jabs. i said it again and cant wait till it happens.. i really think fedor is about to fall significantly and have to build his name up again or retire. im a fedor fan too.

if he comes out like an animal and destroys silva ill take my seat i got no problem with that but thats how im feelin goin into it.

One of Fedor's major strengths is fear.

Fedor is legendary and everyone who fights him knows it. They're hesitant to begin with, and that can make the difference.

I wouldn't expect most people to perform at their best against him.

I love it when people claim "fedor almost lost that one" or "he had fedor beat"
    smh
watch the fights.... and i mean WATCH THE FIGHTS
when he's on the ground watch the way he positions himself and the way he moves his hips to stay out of dangerous predicaments
    he knows what he's doing
hell watch the arlovski fight.... he baited him into going for the knee and made him pay.... that wasn't luck
