  1. To me, it means a few things...

    an MC is someone who:

    1. Knows how to freestyle well
    2. Could battle if they wanted to
    3. Gives an audience a really good performance
    4. Gives the DJ credit during the shows
    5. Is not ashamed to sell his own CD's from the van outside the venue
    B) sub-definition: cares about who the audience is
    ___________________________________________________

    a rapper is someone who:

    1. Creates music garenteed to sell
    2. Creates an image that will sell
    3. Does songs from the current album and commercial hits
    4. Get's songs on the radio and MTV / BET rotation
    5. Get's paid more then professional sports players to make bad music for teenagers

    ___________________________________________________

The true essence of hip-hop goes to the MC

a lot of people get it twisted and call MC's rappers, when in reality, it's bullshit. The media and popularity of the "bling bling" faze gave hip-hop a bad name, some people only think of that when they hear "rap".

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Drop your opinion on this matter...

Based on your definition (rapper #4), Common and Talib Kweli are both rappers as opposed to emcees...

    You're a typical closed-minded "underground" fan.

I say it like you define yourself - you're the type of person that separates MC from rapper and rap from hip-hop.

There is no difference. Nelly is an MC/Rapper. Aesop Rock is an MC/Rapper.

there is a slight difference because not all rappers can emcee

some rappers give crappy live performances but to be a true emcee you have to really move the crowd...someone like busta rhymes is a true emcee because if you ever saw him live you cant help but go crazy

I guess alot of people make the generalization that emcee ties in with hip hop, and rappers tie in with rap. But in the end, its still all the same.

it's the same shit, rappers give bad performances, but "emcees" give bad ones too, I remember watching Jeru the Damaja doing a show in Japan, and he was just standing there, not into it or nuthin and then got mad at the crowd for not gettin crunk, that shit was boring...I've been to concerts by underground and mainstream rappers, the best one was an Outkast concert (in 2000, so most of y'all were callin them commercial by then)...

...and yeah, Lil Jon is not a rapper, he's a producer...

exactly..it's idiocy, every artist who "raps" is considered a rapper since a rapper is defined as someone who performs rap..so based on your opinions a guy like Masta Ace isn't a rapper, right.

    Dummy.

EXACTLY.. you can be a good MC and be a terrible rapper... example, Doug E Fresh isn't a great "rapper" but he's one of the greatest MC's of all-time... MC = master of ceremonies, move the crowd (according to Rakim) and microphone controller....... MC means rocking shows... there's rappers that don't know how to rock a crowd at all... how to get 'em hyped and "move the crowd"

a hypeman is also considered a MC so there is a difference... a rapper isn't necessarily a MC and a MC isn't necessarily a rapper... HUGE DIFFERENCE.......

    AND -1-
