A lot of us have had to start doing it that way cause too many 'clients' agree for you to do it, then end up going to someone else anyways! If you have seen their portfolio and intend on having them design it for you, why NOT pay upfront?

This is business like anything else, you should expect at least to pay a deposit. When did you last walk out of a store with a new TV, and agree to pay them somewhere down the line if you liked it?

And as a sidenote, I've seen his designs, and I think you can see from his portfolio you're gonna get a pretty good cover for your money. $50 isn't jack if you consider that it involves you selling 5 cd's for $10 a piece. Depends on how many you think you can shift I guess...and I KNOW Nonsense shifts WELL in excess of that!!

i LOVE HIS designs, BUT! you dont go to the store...give them 100 bucks and ask them to get u a TV...u PICK the tv u want, then u pay for it....I love his designs, but I dont pay up front for anything unless i know what I'm getting, however I do have some graphic heads on this site that i've worked w/ whom i can provide as refrences which will show that I pay promptly once service has been rendered, I'll need a CD cover designed in the very near future and had his site bookmarked because i wanted to get at him b4 i read this post, if u can do the work and show me ( i dont care if u put sample sample sample all accross it as long as i see it, b4 i pay anything, then I would love to do business, get at me on ain

gcoxintrannuity <-- thats my aim name, I'm always online but only actually at the computer weekdays from 9-6 ET. holla if interested

I do understand what u mean Edjames, but u also have to realize that i know a few people who paid upfront to "graphics specialists" and ended up not getting what they want and/or the person doing the work for hire procrastinated. so payment after services is like a motivational tool of sorts...HOLLA!

Yeah I see your point too man.

I guess it's just a kind of 'catch 22', cause whilst the 'clients' get screwed, I have been put out of time and money so many times before. You spend a whole week on a design just for someone to turn around and tell you someone else already did it.

If people would just stick to one designer, it'd all be good, and it's not the promptness of payment etc thats a problem. It's when people ask you to do something, then go somewhere else whilst you're doing it. Inevitably there'll always be someone doing it cheaper or faster, and you end up having your time wasted.

I guess it's one of those things that neither client or designer can win, and you gotta just work on trust. Hard to get that over the net though.

Anyways, best of luck finding that cover.

well if i was a designer i would just take a small payment upfront like $20. Whos gonna pay that $20 and flake out? I know his work is good but paying upfront like that is like somebody buying a beat from me and paying before they listen to it.

I look on it more as them commissioning you to make a beat for them. Guess thats where we differ. I would agree though, $20 is a reasonable amount to pay upfront, although I did recently have someone pay their $20 then disappear!

    he's nice...

i do designs n shit too and i ask for a deposit b4 i start to make sure the person is serious about gettin it i dont wanna work for free. anybody can say hey make me a cd cover and then u make it and they say nevermind i changed my mind. then ur screwed. the creator needs some kinna protection so i say a deposit is fair. U put money down, preview the design, u like it u pay the remaining balance, u dont, u can request some changes b4 paying the rest...

but it goes both ways.....the designer says I can have a rough draft to you one week after i rec. the deposit....u send the deposit and wait weeks and weeks b4 he even shows you anything, then when he shows it to you it is no where NEAR what you requested....and when u ask for your money back...he says let me try again...another month or so passes, then he comes at u with "Oh I forgot....or I been real busy" after 6 MONTHS....u ask for your money back....when it doesnt come to you in 2 months your like...well I just got hustled out of 20 dollars....this is a true story that happened to me...I know a lot of people on this board wouldnt do that....but because of that experience I dont pay until i see a design......you can put sample all across it...as long as i see it..
    1. So i can know what I'm buying...EXACTLY WHAT I'M BUYING
    2. So i know its finished b4 I send any payment

but we can sit an argue about this for the rest of Rapmusic.com's life....it can go either way...however if D Lux would like to make some money off of my next project..we can talk business...we are looking at a few designers for our CD....but will choose ONE before anyone designs anything....it wont be ok all 8 of you design something and we'll pick the best one....because 7 people just did a lot of work for nothing..HOLLA!

Totally see both arguments, but I'd agree with VIRBLE. I guess it's a case of working with trusted designers. I know that I always try and get something back to people within a few days, and get the jobs signed off in a week. Sometimes that obviously isn't possible, especially if you can't get in contact with THEM.

    But anyways, best of luck.

Basically the way I work is 1ST we work out payment details, easiest is paypal.com, 2ND you tell me exactly what u want designed, then I will send u a couple different drafts. You pick out the one you like and I will make any changes you feel needed to the design. I have a SATISFACTION GUARENTEE in which if you are not satisfied with your design, I will go back to the drawing board and create something different until your happy with the design. 3RD step is I will send u all the design files either through e-mail or on a burned cd.

im gonna be adding to my site soon satisfied customers with they e-mail... and the reason I ask for all the money upfront is so I can concentrate on the designs 100% and not worry about gettin payments in the mail or having checks clear. Its better for both sides

Warning: the following are not hate words hehe

his skill is not worth $50. i understand that they're samples but even smp have to be clean and professional

for the ill state cover: read up 2 photoshop tutorials and u got it

2pac and 50 cent covers: same grunge style with almost exactly the same grunge brush for the border

luda and ja covers: too much graphx and color scheme... whoa

fonts: grunge and graffiti text are old school, even tho some of u want an underground feel to it, graffiti fonts will drive away conservative hip hop fans (that is if you're plannin to sell it off the shelves)

well they're just samples and he can do better? i could be wrong but when one's samples are around the same level of difficulty and other elements, don't expect anything more than those

this guy is stuck on the grunge age (i was too hehe)

when you're lookin for a cover designer on the net, raise your standards

about payin upfront: i'm a designer myself (not covers), i agree that clients should not pay first, if they hire someone else while you're workin on it, that only means you're not workin fast enough or your piece sucks, i design websites and that happened before, i only have myself to blame

i wouldn't suggest any online covers designer to any artist because your cover prollie gonna look very or slightly similar to many many many other covers

but what do i kno? hehe
i don't browse this board often so if any wanna bitch, go ahead, i prollie ain't gonna come back to read this
