    ^^ dude you dont need anything better than a ksm32 and an mmp2 both are studio qualified equipment... i listened to the stuff on your page you just need to learn mix better if you want better quality not upgrading ur equipment when its already worth like a total of $800

    but anyways the next step up would be the shure ksm44 and idk about the preamp but you definetly dont need anything better than what you got... work on your skills and mixing instead.

    The 44 really isn't too much of a step up, as the 32 is really the best bang for the buck out of the 3 KSM mics, IMO.

    I would upgrade the pre, before the mic, maybe to something a little more pro...Robbie, etc etc

    I wonder how long the usb cable is. Gonna be funny seeing people spend 70 on a mic and 30 on a longer cable. Long USB cables are expensive.

    ...also wonder how one could live monitor the mic. Who's going to be the first sucker...err...tester here?

    ...and you can get a cheap ass xlr > xlr cable too...but I bet you wouldn't buy it!

    I've had data transfer problems using a cheap 12' usb cable I bought @ microcenter. When I would transfer files from my external drive to my PC - I'd get a few corrupt files - especially large files (iso and ghost images). Switched to a shorter cable - no longer had the problem. Switched to a 10' monster brand USB cable - no more problems.

    ...not the best test in the world - but it's enough to steer me away from cheap ass > 6' USB cables.

    On a side note: The cheap long cable likes my midi controller. Never had problems there. I figure the midi controller is not sending as much data/sec as the external drive was....just a guess...

    maybe I just have a bad cable...

    $500 mic, $300 pre for fucking around.
    Sure, seems rational to me.
    Considering if you wanted to open a small time, and I mean SMALL ass vocals only studio, shit can run you $30,000 or more, so $800 to practice on is nothing.

    I'd say $800 is a lot to practice on it's a lot more than most people on here spend for recording.

    Arcane, what soundcard are you using... that might be the other problem (besides your mixing) that might be holding your quality back.

    I have...

    Shure KSM32 Retail $500 ---> paid $300
    EMU-1212M Retail $200 -----> paid $160
    M-Audio DMP3 Retail $160 --> paid $140

    That's $860 worth of equipment... and I'm not planning to upgrade every again but if I ever do, I'll most likely end up upgrading my preamp to the Roland MMP2 and that's it.

    Ok, but put that anology to use.
    99.9% of people on this site will never be signed, so infact those people DID spend that money to practice, because they're not going anywhere.

    Most cats come out with an "album", it's usually ass n chips, but locals might buy it, and after a couple of years, they find a new hobby, so 9.9 out of 10 people really spent that money, on something that will never amount to shit for them.

    That sounds rough, but, he's doing what everyone else is, spending money on his hobby.

    ^ I agree with you completely... but my only point was he's spending a lot more $ on his hobby than 90% of RM

    Not really, look at beat makers, they spend thousands, and most cats on rm, look at it like this...

    Mons - Avg price probably $300
    Mic - Avg spent $200-300
    Soundcard - Avg spent probably $200
    Mic cables, stand, pop filter, headphones $150

    So if you look at it, alot of kids are dropping a grand on the hobby.

    i want to upgrade it, but im not sure if i want to go pro tools (digi 001 or 002) because i'll be using it at school and be able to bring assignments an shit home, or if i want to go for a 1212m, which is obviously like a billion times cheaper haha
