When I really thought about it, I couldn't answer the question "What are bars?" Anyone have a solid definition?

normally the two line structure of a set up and a punch = a bar

the term has been thrown around a lot now and I guess it means the opposite of jokes in this day

someone on this site recently asked said to me "do you even know what bars are?" and I thought about it and it made me laugh

no, in a two line structure of setup+punch, that's 2 bars

hence a 16-bar verse being standard, which comes out to like :50-1:10 at most bpms

originally in music they are considered measures of time that make up a song and its time signature. (ex. four/four beat)

in battle rap it is more like the structure of lyrics framed in lines.

    leaned for some reason.

to my understanding, bars most recently means lines that aren't personals, jokes, said by white people etc.

yeah , thats what i always thought

in other words , a "16 bar verse" , would consist of , 16 lines...

i remember when I first hear of "bars" in some rap song in like 03 , and always assumed it was rhymes...i also assumed it was rhymes , in rap only , then heard some singer on tv discuss "last few bars" from a song and thinking like wtf bars are rap...lol i was like 13

lmao @ "not said by white people" hahahahaha...

tbh bars is supposed to mean "not jokes," namely shit with wordplay an whatnot to it...however, it most often means gun lines...i don't have anything against gun lines, i use 'em myself, but it IS sad that's all many people consider bars...

that said, it's been changing even more lately...now it seems to mean raw lines with a serious vibe, not even wordplay...cuz wordplay falls under the "there's a difference between metaphors an real rap" guise...so i guess shit like arsonal's "havin a shoot out right in front the principle soon as he let school out"...

i honestly don't know what the fuck battle rap fans think a bar is nowadays tbh an i don't really care...

Definition of Bars, written like some Merriam-Webster shit:

Bars is used to refer to lines, often structured in ways, used to verbally attack an opponent during a rap battle. Bars can include jokes, gun references, punchlines, name flips, metaphors, similes, traps and other types of lines.

    A bar is a 4 beat measure

In battle rap, bars are just the same thing as lines

It's implied they are dope lines tho, no heroin
