I'm pretty new to using a MIDI keyboard for making beats so this might be a noob question but I would like to know how to assign pads to use different channels/instruments for different trigger pads on the keyboard?

I have an Axiom 49 and I'm running Pro Tools 8.

For example I'm using a kick in one VSTi and a snare in another on separate tracks. Right now I have them linked to separate MIDI tracks as well and I have them assigned to different channels too. Am I doing it wrong?

Basically my question is how could I get it set up so that when I press one pad it's a kick and when I press the other pad it's a snare so when I record it I could play both simultaneously on the pads?

I usually just make beats in fruity loops and just do each instrument separately but it would be so much easier if I could get all my drums laid out on the pads separately in my pro tools session and record them all at once. Any help would be much appreciated.
