i usually hate mainstream shit, but jay z can rap about laundry and i'd bump my head to it.

he had swag before the fucking word got around like the cheap whore it is.

theres more to rapping than being the best lyricist, theres flow, content, and production.

I know what dream is saying, cause we have been arguing this for years, and I am pretty sure that is how I might have responded to a comment about a rapper that I had made up my mind about....I always have stated that being a great rapper is about being able to create great rap music....dream in all honesty, how much of your view is based on the dumb it down line?....I am not even trying to argue I am just curious.....

Funny how people will shit on Jay then turn around and praise niggas like Lupe or Kendrick. Jay gave birth to so many niggas it's not even funny.

when did i say these weren't a part of rapping?

you sayin jay isn't a top 50 lyricist is one point

you saying Jay is only top 20 rapper cuz he can make good music is another

    i disagree with both

    he's a top 20 lyricist

and he's top 20 rapper cuz he a dope ass rapper whose made good music..thats why he got longevity, he an artist before the art if that makes sense..

It's been a decent year for me I fuck with Born Sinner the most I really like the production on it. Now I'm a huge Hov fan I own almost all his solo albums with the exception of BP3 and while I agree he's not lyrically on that Reasonable Doubt shit he definitely is a top lyricist. The man can fucking spit and is still known to kill shit but about MCHG I didn't like it at first but it's definitely grown on me while it's not my first choice I will listen to it.

I feel remarkably odd and uncomfortable if I try to refer to jay as hov out loud....shit just cannot sound normal or unfanboyish.....

But what the fuck is a lyricist though? To me, the most important aspect of lyricism is song writing. I don't care how many literary devices you can flip in a minute, if you can't write a decent song, then you suck as a lyricist.

yeah, it is used as a overly broad term now....A lyricist is a song writer by definition....rapping is a performance art, and imo should be looked at mildly similar to singing....great singers are not looked down upon by people because they didn't write a song that is great...Imagine saying Jimi Hendrix bit bob dylan on the songs he coverd...shit would be crazy.....

Rap of course fairly assumes that writing lyrics is a needed practice for the determination of how good one is, but it is really being overly nit-picked by people looking to knock the talent of others.....Writing stuff with the intent to have it heard is a dream held by every artist, and is an art regardless of how one may think of the writing.....I could go on about this for a while

Also when a writer is a performer too, a well written song means zero if it is not performed well....
