    5. you're a negotiator for the NYPD, your assignment is to talk a man out of
killing him self and several hostages, there's a twist though, you're one of
    the hostages, expand...

To Live In Pain is Our Penance

Police lights swatted the darkness, now embroidered in red
and blues. Hues of in-between greens, blinked boisterous, fled
to the shadows as time unraveled. Silence is the noise of the dead…
but silence screamed as the man’s gun poked the boy in the head
Cameras flashed! The media frenzy left television stations empty
When we…decided for the boy, the department would send me..
Besides, inside me, Death slept in hibernation for the winter
    Come this spring…I…

"just tell me when I can enter?"

I slowly crept in. Looking for deceptions and boldly stepped in
and was met by an old, decrepit small man…holding weapons
By old, I mean around 50, maybe. His brown eyes shifted crazy
In pools of strawberry cream…He took his gun, flipped the safety…
"Move!" he shoed. The hostages looked to see the different face.
Many were elderly and weak, asleep in puddles of liquid waste.
Enough, I thought, beginning the textbook, "I’m here to help."

"Tell me then," he said, the gun to his head,
    "why shouldn’t I kill myself…"

    *****

She wouldn’t talk to me, even on her death bed as death crept
and death wrecked her insides, her love for me had just leapt
into the abyss of apathy. And that’s where my lover stayed
Unmad at me…sadly she didn’t even care enough to hate.
And as A.I.D.S fatefully charmed and cradled her in His arms.
"I’m sorry," was all I could say. That next day she was gone.
In her Will she left me with regret. I inherited levels of pain
that had never registered in my now grief-festering brain.
She left me adulterous pictures of my kisses and mistresses,
offering moist fruit, forbidden, except for breif instances… when…

    *****

I thought I had thought it, but instead I said it loud

    "I don’t know."

There was a murmer from hostages in the crowd.
"what?" The man’s face collapsed as he looked up in surprise
And age-made fissures irrigated water away from his eyes
"I..don’t know!" I recanted loudly. As my soul played back,
the man pressed the gun to his temple,
    "please, don’t say that…"
He told me about how his daughter was caught and slaughtered
By a disease called self-loathing, and he had brought it on her…
With constant judgement, it wasn’t enough that she was smart
She had to be everything his wife wasn’t…a living work of art,
which he created and baited to the grave’s darkest depths
She became Bulemic. Didn’t eat for weeks and starved to death…
    "I WANT TO DIE!!!"
He screamed and it seemed like the police sirens stopped
And silence, in death’s violent tongue, sang the Siren’s song.
"so do i…" I whispered… "but, where’s the justice in that?"
My wife’s innocent face, shimmered and waved under that fact.
Her full lips parted in sweet whispers I had silenced long ago
with the virus of deceit and unused condoms lying on the floor.
Her brown eyes downsized. And in a season they said I’d follow
"to live in pain is our penance."
Truth was always a hard pill to swallow.
    His gun fell.
    Empty.
And quickly all the hostages raced.
The man bacame a boy in my arms, I solemnly coddled his face,
staring blankly into nothingness, the abyss my wife had left me
so that I could contemplate my ugliness she had died accepting.
He and I cried deftly, not hearing the door being kicked down.
And every officer in two districts lock and loading their clip rounds
We didn’t hear the cries of FREEZE, as we fell to our knees
weeping. Two cops flinched and pinched out one shell, two or three.
They all hit the man in the back, sheering and piercing arteries
with the sound of a bat beating beef. He fiercly, awkwardly,
asked, "are we okay now Jessica?" His eyes went blank.
They took him away…Patted my back, lightly, thanks.
But I stayed on my knees, coughing into a fist full of blood.
knowing that in a few months… my reckoning comes.
Meanwhile, I remembered how my wife had wanted a baby swing
    "I’m sorry…," I said, with another payment…
until the first day of spring.
